About Jan Coburn, Acrylic Paint Artist
Lowcountry must be in my DNA!
Living near the water energies me, and it
makes me want to paint what I feel.
My connection began as a child in Charleston, playing in
the marshes, losing more than a few shoes to the hungry mud, and climbing the
sprawling live oaks in my neighborhood. Some of those childhood marshes have
disappeared, while some of those magnificent old trees remain. The memories
have stayed with me, and I wish I could paint the joy I felt in those early
years.
Working primarily in acrylic, I use color and expressive
interpretation to build contemporary, impressionist, occasionally realistic, occasionally
abstract, but mostly fun paintings.
There is always a story in my paintings, and I share that with my collectors. My characters often have names!
I am a collector of art made by other artists. Living with original art brings me tremendous
joy, so I understand how a painting can become part of a home, part of a
memory, and part of everyday life.
Now, as an artist, I hope to create that same kind of
connection for someone else. Whether the painting is a small first purchase or
a larger work chosen for a special place, I want it to bring joy, beauty, and a
sense of connection to the coastal life we love. There is always another
coastal story waiting to be told.

Art Education
Calum Cameron, a Canadian Artist and Teacher, inspired and taught me in the beginning. Since then I have explored many techniques and taken many classes from artists I enjoy.
Art Subjects
My art is focused on the low country life - whether in the marches, on the water in a boat, or in the life below the ocean waves.
